Shopify Automations: Abandoned Cart
The Shopify Abandoned Cart SMS automation sends an automatic revenue recovery text to shoppers who start checkout but do not complete their purchase.
How to Enable the Automation
- Make sure your Shopify account is connected to Notify Customers.
- Go to Automations.
- Find Abandoned Cart SMS.
- Click Enable.

If Shopify needs an additional permissions, Notify will ask you to reconnect Shopify before enabling the automation. This is required so Notify can find open checkouts.
You can return to the same Automations page and select Disable at any time to turn the automation off.
How it Works
When this automation is enabled, Notify Customers checks your connected Shopify store for open checkouts. If a checkout is at least 1 hour old (and less than 72 hours old), Notify can send the shopper a text with a link back to their checkout.
The default message is:
Hi {first_name}, you left something in your cart at {your_business_name}! Complete your purchase here: {checkout_url}
Notify automatically adds the required opt-out text: Reply STOP to unsubscribe .
Who Gets a Text
A shopper will receive an abandoned cart text when all of these are true:
- The checkout is still open and has not been completed.
- The checkout was created between 1 and 72 hours ago.
- Shopify has a usable mobile number for the shopper.
- The shopper is subscribed to SMS marketing in Shopify.
- The customer has not opted out of texting in Notify Customers.
- Your account has enough credits for the automation text.
Notify sends at most one text per abandoned checkout.
Pricing
Each successful abandoned cart SMS uses the Automation Text Price for your country. Notify reserves the charge before sending the text, and refunds it if the message fails to send.
| Country | Price Per Automation Text |
| United States | $0.05 USD |
| Canada | $0.05 USD |
| Australia | $0.08 USD |
| New Zealand | $0.15 USD |
| United Kingdom | $0.08 USD |
| Ireland | $0.10 USD |
| France | $0.10 USD |
| Spain | $0.12 USD |
| Japan | $0.15 USD |
Message History
You can review automation text history from Automations > Message History. The history shows when the text was sent, the customer, mobile number, automation name, message, and delivery status.
Why a Text Might Not Send
Common reasons include:
- The customer completed checkout before the automation ran.
- The checkout is too new or older than 72 hours.
- Shopify does not have a valid mobile phone number for the shopper.
- The shopper is not subscribed to SMS marketing in Shopify.
- The customer opted out of texting in Notify Customers.
- Your account credit balance is too low.
- Shopify needs to be reconnected with the required permissions.
